Maius
Setup

How to install.

Maius v2 runs on a Mac or a PC; Natto is Mac only. Natto needs nothing installed first. Maius needs an AI account you already have.

Maius v2 · Mac

The control deck.

Three steps that matter, then four optional extras. Download, open it, and let the app connect your AI account — about ten minutes, and no Terminal unless you want one.

  1. 1

    Check your Mac

Maius v2 needs an Apple Silicon Mac — an M1 or newer. Click the Apple menu → About This Mac; if the chip line says Apple M-anything, you are fine. Ten seconds here saves a 300 MB download that cannot run.

  2. 2

    Download and open Maius v2

Get it from the Maius v2 page, drag it to Applications and open it. It is signed and notarised by Apple, so it opens on a double-click with no security warning. Maius then opens its own setup panel by itself and tells you what this computer still needs — so the next step is something you do inside the app, not in a Terminal.

  3. 3

Let Maius connect your AI account

Maius runs your agents on an account you already pay for, and one is enough — a Claude subscription or a ChatGPT one. You do not need both, and you do not buy anything from us. In the setup panel, press Install beside whichever you have and then Sign in: Maius runs the publisher’s own installer for you and opens your browser to sign in. It never asks for or stores that password.

If you would rather do it by hand, these are the exact commands Maius itself runs — they need neither Homebrew nor Node. Sign in with claude, or with codex login (bare codex opens an agent session instead, which is not what you want here).

    # a Claude subscription:
    curl -fsSL https://claude.ai/install.sh | bash
    claude

    # or a ChatGPT subscription:
    curl -fsSL https://chatgpt.com/codex/install.sh | sh
    codex login
  4. 4

Install Homebrew, only for the extras below optional

Maius works without Homebrew. It is not needed to run Maius, to connect your AI account, or to use your agents — it is only how the three optional installs below are fetched, and how Maius later adds extras such as ffmpeg if a video job asks for one. Skip it until you want one of those. Paste this into Terminal (press ⌘Space, type Terminal, press Return); it takes a few minutes and asks for your Mac password, which it is asking the Mac, not us.

    /bin/bash -c "$(curl -fsSL https://raw.githubusercontent.com/Homebrew/brew/HEAD/install.sh)"
  5. 5

Install Ollama, for the private vault optional

Miso is the agent that holds your private documents, and it thinks on a model running on your own Mac rather than on anyone's server. Ollama is what runs that model. Skip this and everything else still works; Miso simply will not answer.

    brew install --cask ollama
  6. 6

Install Tailscale, to reach your deck from your phone optional

Maius runs on your Mac. Tailscale is what lets your iPhone or iPad open it from anywhere without putting anything on the public internet. Install it on the Mac and on the phone, sign in to the same account on both, and Maius will show you a QR code to scan.

    brew install --cask tailscale
  7. 7

Install Obsidian, if you want your notes connected optional

Only needed if you want agents reading and writing your Obsidian vault. Nothing else depends on it.

    brew install --cask obsidian
Maius v2 · Windows

The same deck, on a PC.

Four steps, then two optional extras. The same app and the same version as the Mac download — take the one for the computer you are installing on.

  1. 1

    Check your PC

Maius v2 needs 64-bit Windows 10 (version 1809 or later) or Windows 11, on an Intel or AMD processor. In Command Prompt:

    ver
    echo %PROCESSOR_ARCHITECTURE%
  2. 2

Download and run the installer — stay online

Stay connected to the internet for this step. The installer fetches Microsoft’s WebView2 runtime while it runs, and a clean Windows 11 does not have it. With no network the installer exits having silently done nothing. Check the download first, in Command Prompt, in your Downloads folder — use the file name you actually got, and the number it prints must match the one on your receipt page.

    certutil -hashfile Maius-Windows-<version>-Setup.exe SHA256
  3. 3

    Expect “Windows protected your PC”

Windows SmartScreen shows that for any installer without a certificate on it, and ours has not got one yet. It is what you should expect, not a sign of a bad file. Once the checksum above has matched, choose More info → Run anyway. If the checksum did not match, stop and download it again — “Run anyway” is safe advice only for a file you have checked.

  4. 4

Let Maius connect your AI account

Maius opens its own setup panel when it starts and tells you what is missing. Press Install beside the subscription you have — Claude or ChatGPT, one is enough — then Sign in. Maius runs the publisher’s own installer and opens your browser; it never asks for or stores that password.

By hand instead? These are the commands Maius runs, and they go in PowerShell — your prompt says PS C:\Users\.... If a line fails with 'irm' is not recognized you are in Command Prompt, not PowerShell; nothing is wrong with your computer. Open a new window before signing in, and if that answers is not recognized the install still worked — the installer just did not add itself to your PATH, which the last line fixes once.

    # a Claude subscription:
    irm https://claude.ai/install.ps1 | iex
    claude --version

    # or a ChatGPT subscription:
    irm https://chatgpt.com/codex/install.ps1 | iex
    codex login

    # if either says 'is not recognized', add it to PATH once, then open a new window:
    [Environment]::SetEnvironmentVariable("Path", [Environment]::GetEnvironmentVariable("Path","User") + ";$env:USERPROFILE\.local\bin", "User")
  5. 5

    Install Git for Windows optional

Optional as far as Claude Code and Codex are concerned — without it, agents run their commands through PowerShell instead of Bash. Get it from git-scm.com.

  6. 6

Install Tailscale, to reach your deck from your phone optional

Get it from tailscale.com and sign in, then use SETUP in the app the same way the Mac does.

Natto

The local agent.

Three steps, and most of it is waiting for a download.

  1. 1

    Check your Mac

Natto needs an Apple Silicon Mac with 16 GB of memory or more. 18 GB or more gets it a better brain. Apple menu → About This Mac shows both the chip and the memory.

  2. 2

    Download and open Natto

Get it from the Natto page and drag it to Applications. Nothing needs to be installed first — no Homebrew, no command line, no AI subscription. Natto brings its own brain.

  3. 3

Let it download its brain, once

On first launch Natto downloads the model it thinks with — about 20 GB, so give it time and a good connection. This is the only part that needs the internet. After that Natto works offline, voice included, and nothing you say to it leaves your Mac.

If something does not work

“Maius can’t find Claude” and you just installed it
Quit Maius completely (⌘Q) and open it again. It reads your PATH when it starts, so a tool installed while it was running is invisible to it until then.
The Mac refuses to open the app
Right-click the app and choose Open, rather than double-clicking. Both apps are signed and notarised by Apple, but the first launch of anything downloaded asks once.
Windows says “Windows protected your PC”
Expected, and not a sign of a bad file. SmartScreen says that about any installer without a certificate on it, and ours has not got one yet. Check the SHA-256 first; once it matches, choose More info → Run anyway. If it did not match, download it again rather than running it.
The Windows installer appeared to do nothing
You were almost certainly offline. It fetches Microsoft’s WebView2 runtime while it runs, and with no network it exits silently. Reconnect and run it again.
Windows says claude or codex is not recognized
The install worked; it just did not add itself to your PATH. Step 4 of the Windows list has the one line that fixes it — then open a new window.
A Windows command complains about &&, or says irm is not recognized
You are typing it into the other window. A prompt reading PS C:\Users\… is PowerShell; the same line without the PS is Command Prompt. They do not take the same commands.
Natto’s brain download stalls
It is about 20 GB in one go. On a shared or metered connection it is worth starting it when nothing else is using the line.
Still stuck
